Ephesians 6:5-9 “Working for Jesus”

1. Work is Good! 

A. Created by God. (Gen 2:15)

B. Corrupted by Sin (Gen 3)

2. (Eph 6:5-8) Slavery in Biblical times

                A. In OT (Exo 21:16, 26-27; Lev 25:10 (Year of Jubilee); Deut 23:15-16)

                B. In NT (book of Philemon, 1 Tim 1:9-10; 1 Cor 7:21-23; Col 3:22-4:1; Col 3:11)

                C. “slaves obey your earthly masters with respect, fear, sincere heart, as you would obey Christ.” 

                (1 Pet 2:18-21; Titus 2:9-10; 1 Tim 6:1-2). We are a witness for Christ.

                D. Masters were to treat their slaves with kindness, fairness, equal in Christ. 

3. Application to modern workplace

                A. Obey your boss (unless it goes against Scripture – Acts 5:29)

                B. (v.6-7) Work with good attitude, respect, even when no one is watching – you ultimately are 

working for the Lord!

C. (v.8) The Lord will reward you (Col 3:24; 1 Cor 3:8, 14; Matt 16:27)

D. (v.9) Bosses are to treat your workers well -treat them fairly, don’t play favorites (Rom 2:11), God is watching
