 “Joseph: Obeying God When Life Gets Hard”

(Genesis 37-50) 
 

1. God’s calling of Joseph with dreams (Gen 37:1-11)

 

 

2. What to do when life falls apart (Gen 37 & 39)

a. Sold into slavery in Egypt (Gen 37:12-36)

b. Falsely accused and imprisoned (for 13 years) (Gen 39)

c. “The Lord (Yahweh) was with Joseph” (39:2, 21, 23)

 

3.  Lessons learned when feeling forgotten by God (Gen 40-41)

a. Baker and Cupbearer’s dreams: place your hope in God alone (Gen 40)

b. Pointing Pharoah and all Egypt to the Lord (Gen 41)

c.  From the “outhouse” (prison) to the “White House” (Pharoah’s palace)

 

4. Forgiveness and Reconciliation with the family that caused hurt (Gen 42-45)

a.  Forgiveness is a choice. In Christ’s strength, to absorb the pain caused and not hold the offender against you anymore (like Jesus forgave us).

b.  Reconciliation involves both parties, true repentance, rebuilding trust.

 

5. God’s Blessings and Redemptive Plan continue. (Gen 46-50)     

a.  Judah’s descendants will rule (i.e. King David & Jesus!) (Genesis 49:10; see also 48:3-4)

b.  Joseph tells his brothers “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are to day.” (Genesis 50:20)
